Fill the bath with warm water using a jug or an extension hose, place some baby wash into the bath as you fill it. Fill the bath with enough water to cover your baby's shoulders and neck to keep them warm, you can also make the bath deep enough so that your baby can float during bath time. The temperature of the bath should be warm but not too hot, mix the water well so that the warm water and the baby wash are evenly distributed, place the inside of your wrist in the water to check the temperature if it is comfortable then it should be suitable for your baby.
Remove your baby's clothes and nappy and clean your baby's nappy area with the baby wipe (if required). Lower your baby into the bath you need to support your baby's neck and head throughout their bath to keep their face above the water. Place your forearm under their neck with your hand holding their arm under their shoulder, your other hand will then be free to wash your baby. Newborn babies may cry during bath time however it won't be long until your baby begins to enjoy bath time. Once your baby is settled in the water start by cleaning their face wipe your baby's eyes from the nose outward in a single move clean around your baby's ears, but do not use cotton buds or any object to clean inside your baby's ears, it is okay if your baby's ears to go under the water during their bath. Wash the rest of your baby's face, if your baby's hair is particularly dirty pump some baby wash directly onto your hand and gently rub their head and hair.
Once you have cleaned your baby's face and hair use the washcloth or your hands to wash your baby's body be sure to clean inside all their skin folds and creases such as under their neck, arms and around their groin and nappy area, a newborns clenched hands may relax and open in the bath if not, you will need to open them to wash them properly, once you have washed your baby let them float in the bath for a while if they are calm and content if they are enjoying the warmth of the water they may relax, which could help if they will soon be going to sleep.
When you and your baby are ready lift your baby out of the bath and wrap them in a towel straight away so they don't get cold. Gently rub their body dry with the towel, it is usually best to start with their head and face and work down to their toes. Being careful to dry them thoroughly in all their skin folds and creases. If your baby's skin is prone to dryness now is the perfect time to use some baby moisturizer to soothe and condition their delicate skin. Once you have moisturized your baby place of fresh nappy and clothes on. When you have finished the bath in your baby and they are safe and happy away from the bathing area.
